About the artwork…

The idea for this artwork started years ago as I was looking through old photos of my maternal grandmother. She passed away before I was born, so I never had the chance to know her. The photos were beautiful, but I didn’t feel connected to her. I came across one of her grade school photos, and she had written “Love, Ruth” across the top. There was something about seeing her handwriting along with her photo that made her feel so much more real to me.

About Zora…

Zora is my great-great grandmother. After finding some letters she had written over 60 years ago my mind began racing. I was so grateful that the papers had survived all those years, but I wondered how much had been lost. After that, it became clear. Not only is combining the photographs and handwriting a way for me to create beautiful works of art for others, it is also a way to preserve the past.

I’m an artist who loves photography and family keepsakes. Having a connection to the past is so special - It’s the closest thing to time travel that I’ve found! I love hearing stories about things that happened or seeing pictures from years ago and learning about what my parents and grandparents were like before they filled those roles.

Speaking of families… I’m married to a sweet, country boy from Tennessee, and I am hoping to pass down my love of family history to our two sons.
